My Journey in Supply Chain & Why I’m Writing Here
Hello everyone,
My name is Matthew Baldwin, and I’m currently a full-time student at the University of Michigan, where I’m completing my bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain and Operations Management. I’ve just begun my senior year, but my journey in the automotive industry started much earlier.
At 18 years old, I began my career on the production line at GM’s Flint Assembly (formerly Flint Truck & Bus). Working in a union position gave me a firsthand look at how multiple departments come together to create a finished, high-quality vehicle. Over time, as I moved through roles in operations and materials, I discovered my true passion: the supply chain process.
I was fascinated by how General Motors could coordinate thousands of parts from suppliers around the world with minimal downtime. This interest inspired me to pursue higher education while continuing to build real-world experience. I earned my Associate’s Degree in Applied Science for Business Management at Mott Community College (MCC), graduating with honors, before transferring to the University of Michigan to focus on supply chain and operations.
Around this same time, I joined Ryder System Inc. as a Supply Chain Operations Associate. In this role, I analyze material flow, identify gaps in coverage, and implement solutions while coordinating with cross-functional teams. Over the past year and a half, I’ve gained valuable insight into how supply chains operate at scale and the critical role they play in keeping production moving.
Through this blog, my goal is to connect with supply chain professionals, employers, and like-minded individuals who share my passion for logistics and operations. I’m particularly interested in the future of supply chain management, including the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology to improve efficiency, transparency, and cost savings across global networks.
I plan to publish at least one post per week highlighting tools, systems, and emerging trends in supply chain technology—including some of my own projects. Please note: everything I share here represents my personal perspective and does not reflect my employer’s views. No unauthorized tools are being used in my current position.
Thank you for following along as I share my journey in supply chain management and explore the technologies shaping the future of logistics.
